Reusable bulk bags are known within the packaging industry as “Multi-Trip Bulk Bags.” In order for a bulk bag to be reusable, it must be certified as a Multi-Trip bulk bag and rated with a 6:1 Safety Factor. A standard bulk bag is for one time use only and has a 5:1 Safety Factor. All bulk bag designs are tested on a top-life test machine and are certified to determine if they pass as single or multi-use. If a bag is rated as a Multi-Use, it should clearly state “Multi-Use” and “6:1 Safety Factor” on the bag tag, in addition to a section that allows for a clear notation of how many times the bag has been used.

Multi-Use Bulk Bags can be used up to 10x, pending any wear and tear, damage or contamination that may have occurred. If damage occurs to a reusable bulk bag, it should be discarded as it can be dangerous to continue using.

We recommend thoroughly inspecting the bags after each use to ensure that they are safe, and nothing on the bag tag each time the bag has been emptied and refilled.

There are a few things to consider when assessing if a reusable bulk bag is the right fit for you, the first being cost. Multi-Use Bulk Bags are typically overbuilt and have a higher fabric weight to increase the durability, making them more expensive upfront than a standard bulk bag. Over time, they can be cheaper as the use over time is significantly reduced.

Reusable bulk bags may not be a good fit for every application, both figuratively and literally. For those who require any sort of cleanliness to their bags (industrial, food grade, or pharma grade), reusable bulk bags may not work as they would likely require cleaning between uses to prevent cross contamination. In a literal sense, storing the takes up additional space that your facility may not have room for. Unused bulk bags arrive palletized and single use bags are discarded after use, but multi-use bags require additional storage space for empty bags that are waiting to be refilled.

Can bulk bags be reused?

Yes, bulk bags can be reused if they are designed as multi-trip bags. The ability to reuse bulk bags is more environmentally friendly, which is a big benefit for many companies who are trying to reduce their carbon footprint. At the end of a bulk bags life, it can be recycled either mechanically or chemically to further reduce the environmental impact. For more information on recycling bulk bags, visit our .
