Our team has been experimenting with hemp fabrics to develop an environmentally friendly bulk bag or FIBC. We recently had a customer ask if we could make a biodegradable bulk bag for their product because they felt it would give them an edge on some of the construction products they were bidding. Originally, we thought it would be a reach, but we did some research to see what we could come up with for the customer.

After sourcing the hemp fabric and lift loops for Prototype One, we assembled the bag at our headquarters in Ohio. When we tested the first prototype, the lift loops failed – miserably. Instead of giving up, we reconstructed the bag with polypropylene lift loops and tested it on our top life test machine. To our surprise, it was successful and resulted in a test of 2800 lb at a 5 to 1 safe working load.

With this knowledge, we went further and created a second prototype, ordering heavier lift loop fabric and cotton thread to create a 100% biodegradable bag. After some tensile testing and design tweaks, the bag was on the right track. We produced a sample that was 100% biodegradable and tested at a safe working load of 1100 lbs.

If you have a need for a 100% biodegradable bulk bag, or are interested in learning more about the application, our team can help. Contact Global-Pak to get started on incorporating environmentally friendly hemp bulk bags into your packaging today.
