Global-Pak has expanded our testing capabilities by adding a new Tensile Testing Machine! This allows us to test the amount of force required to break the different components of our bulk bags. Now, we’re able to separately test the fabric, lift loops, individual tapes, or threads in the fabric to determine strength and potential areas of concern.
By identifying a possible component issue, we can pinpoint the concern and fix it quickly. For example, if one bag has an issue with a lift loop breaking, we can collect the sample and test the material against another lift loop on a similarly rated bag. If there’s a discrepancy in the elongation and breaking force between the standard and what we tested, it could be a material issue so we can issue a recall if needed for the specific lot number. These issues usually arise from poor workmanship, component issues, or raw material issues.
A tensile testing machine also allows us to verify that our fabric and lift loops have the proper amount of UVI inhibitor added to the resin during the extrusion of the polypropylene. To test this, we use a control sample of material that hasn’t been subjected to UV exposure and check it for elongation and breaking force. We compare that to a secondary sample that has been subjected to our QVI machine prior to the elongation and breaking test. By simulating the sun and moisture on the polypropylene material, we can test the breaking force and elongation after weathering. The exposed material should retain at least 50% of the original strength.
The tensile test machine is another way that we can quality test our bags, to ensure they are meeting the standards for all our customers.
