Bulk bags, also known as Flexible Intermediate Bulk Containers (FIBCs), are designed to transport and store large quantities of dry bulk materials. A crucial feature of these bags is their lift loops, which allow them to be safely and efficiently lifted and transported. It’s important to know the different types of lift loops available, and how each may be a benefit to your application.

1. Standard Lift Loops

Description: Standard lift loops are the most common type of lifting mechanism found on bulk bags. These loops are sewn into the bag’s top corners and are lifted with a forklift or crane and bars.

Applications: Suitable for general-purpose use in various industries, including agriculture, chemicals, and construction.

Advantages:

  • Easy to use with standard forklift equipment.
  • Versatile and can be used for a wide range of materials.

2. Cross-Corner Lift Loops

Description: Cross-corner lift loops are sewn into the corners of the bulk bag, creating a sturdy arc shape. This design prevents the loops from collapsing inward, making it easier to engage the loops with forklift tines.

Applications: Ideal for handling more voluminous or irregularly shaped loads.

Advantages:

  • Improved stability during lifting.
  • Easier to access and engage with lifting equipment.

3. Sleeve Lift Loops

Description: Sleeve lift loops or tunnel loops are continuous loops of fabric that run along the entire top of the bulk bag. Forklift tines are inserted through the sleeves to lift the bag, providing a secure and stable lifting method.

Applications: Commonly used in industries requiring high levels of safety and stability, such as the food and pharmaceutical industries.

Advantages:

  • Provides a secure and stable lift.
  • Reduces the risk of loop failure.

4. Stevedore Straps

Description: Stevedore straps are additional lifting straps that run over the top of the bulk bag, connected to the primary lift loops. These straps provide extra support and security during lifting operation and allow for a single point of lifting, like with a crane or hook.

Applications: Suitable for lifting with a crane or single point system. Also ideal for very heavy or hazardous materials where additional lifting security is required.

Advantages:

  • Provides additional lifting support.
  • Allows for single point lifting.

5. Extended Lift Loops

Description: Extended lift loops are longer than standard loops, allowing them to be used with different types of lifting equipment, including cranes and hoists, in addition to forklifts. This can be accomplished with additional length, or by adding a “chain loop” to the loop sewn to the bag, which can extend the length of the lift loops.

Applications: Ideal for operations requiring flexibility in lifting methods and equipment.

Advantages:

  • Versatile lifting options.
  • Can be used with various lifting equipment.

*SIDE SEAM LOOPS

A bonus style of lift loop are additional loops on the sides of the bags, down the seam. They are not for lifting, but create a handle of sorts, to help guide the bag or offer additional area to grip during the filling or emptying process.

Choosing the right type of lift loops for your bulk bags is essential for ensuring safe and efficient handling of materials. Whether you need standard lift loops for general use or specialized loops for specific applications, understanding the options available will help you make the best choice for your operational needs.
