If you have ever tried to buy bulk bags, you have probably run into a tangle of names: FIBC, Flexible Intermediate Bulk Container, jumbo bag, PP bag, super sacks, bulk bag containers, and sacks and bags. The good news is that most of these terms overlap. The better news is that Global-Pak can help you sort them out so you get exactly what you need.
Below is a clear, customer-friendly guide to the terminology, how the names are used in different industries and regions, and what to specify when you order.
Why there are so many names?
Industry jargon evolved in different regions, so the same product picked up multiple nicknames.
Buyers often use a material name (like PP for polypropylene) or a size descriptor (like jumbo) when they really mean the same core product.
Search engines and procurement systems reinforce variety in wording, which is why Global-Pak uses several terms to make it easier for customers to find the right bag.
The Core Product: FIBC
What’s it stand for? FIBC = Flexible Intermediate Bulk Container.
Definition? A large, flexible, woven polypropylene container designed to store and transport dry flowable products in bulk.
Typical capacity? Often 1,000 to 4,000 lb safe working load (SWL), with common fill volumes around 35 to 85 cubic feet depending on product density.
Common features:
- Body styles: circular/tubular, U-panel, 4-panel, and baffled for better cube efficiency.
- Lift options: 4 corner loops, cross-corner loops, single- and double-point lift.
- Fill/discharge: open top, duffle top, or fill spout; flat bottom, discharge spout, or full-open bottom.
- Add-ons: liners for moisture or contamination control, coated/uncoated fabric, sift-proof seams, dust-proof construction, document pouches, and pallet compatibility.
- Compliance options: food-grade and pharma-grade construction, metal-detectable/traceable liners, and UN-certified FIBCs for certain hazardous solids.
The main takeaway is that FIBC is the technical term for what most people call a “bulk bag”.
So A “Bulk Bag” in other words would be...
Flexible Intermediate Bulk Container
AKA the long-form of FIBC.
You will see it on specifications, datasheets, and in standards language.
Use it when you want to be formal or when a purchasing system prefers full terms.
Jumbo Bags
What people mean: the same FIBC/bulk bag, with emphasis on large capacity.
Where you hear it: widely used in Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and parts of Europe; also shows up in US conversations.
When to use the term: in everyday conversations or when size is the selling point. If you ask Global-Pak for a “jumbo bag,” we will confirm specs to ensure you get the correct FIBC design.
PP Bags
PP stands for polypropylene, the material used to make woven bulk bags.
Two ways this term is used:
- To mean woven polypropylene FIBCs (bulk bags).
- To mean smaller woven polypropylene sacks (for example, 25–50 kg fertilizer or grain sacks).
Why it matters: “PP bag” can cause confusion. To avoid mix-ups, specify whether you need:
- A full-size FIBC (with lift loops, spouts, etc.), or
- Small woven PP sacks without lift loops.
Super Sacks
Super Sacks are the same thing as bulk bags. This specific name was trademarked by Bag Corp in the 1970s. Due to this, we try to avoid using the term on any of our marketing, but if you say “Super Sack” we know you mean a bulk bag.
Bulk Bag Containers
Bulk Bag Containers appears to be a natural evolution of existing industry language rather than a formally defined standard combining bulk bag with the “C” in FIBC. The term simply reinforces the idea of bulk bags functioning as a true packaging container for storage and transport.
Sacks and Bags
This is a generic umbrella term.
Some buyers say “sacks” when they mean small 25–50 kg bags; others use it generically for any bag.
If you say “sacks,” Global-Pak will ask about target weight, dimensions, and whether you need lift loops to determine if you mean small PP sacks or a true bulk bag/FIBC.
Quick Comparison: How the Names Map
FIBC = Flexible Intermediate Bulk Container = the formal, technical product name for a bulk bag.
Jumbo bag = colloquial name for an FIBC, emphasizing size.
PP bag = could be an FIBC (material: woven PP) or a smaller woven PP sack. Clarify which you mean.
Super Sacks = trademarked but mean the same thing as bulk bag.
Bulk Bag Containers = descriptive term likely formed by combining “bulk bag” with the “C” in FIBC; emphasizes the container function of bulk bags rather than introducing a distinct product type.
Sacks and bags = generic phrase; always clarify capacity, size, and whether lift loops are required.
